Less Light = Less Focus?

If the shorter days of fall & winter seem to go hand in hand with a lower energy level and a somber mood, there is an actual scientific reason: less sunlight exposure can increase melatonin (the hormone that causes sleepiness) and decrease serotonin (a mood stabilizing hormone). This can make things tricky when it’s time to sit down and concentrate on homework after school, especially in the evening. Encourage an earlier homework time whenever possible and promote these healthy habits: lots of fruits and veggies, playtime outside and a good night’s sleep. This can help keep focus sharp even though the sky is dark!
