What is Local School Council?

It is a Georgia law that every elementary, middle and high school in each school system form a local student council. Bolton Academy’s LSC consists of appointed school faculty and elected parents and community members. This advisory group is charged with bringing communities and schools closer together in the spirit of cooperation to solve difficult education problems, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents into the school-based decision-making process.

 What do we do?
We are an advisory group that may influence policy and decisions through recommendations but we do not make the decisions themselves, nor do we raise or spend funds.  Our meetings are open to the public and we encourage parents to voice their concerns either by attending a meeting or contacting us by email atboltonacademylsc@gmail.com<mailto:boltonacademylsc@gmail.com> . Meetings discuss the state of the school and current issues facing Bolton Academy and APS at large. Issues might include:  curriculum and assessments, school and district budgets, district level policies and concerns, school board policies, safety, transportation, facilities and more.
The LSC meets monthly, generally on the first Tuesday of the month at 5 pm. Our next meeting will occur on Tuesday, September 1st, 2015 at 5 pm in the conference room behind the front office desk.  Future meeting dates will be included in the Bolton Academy calendar and are open for anyone to attend.

Transitioning to Local School Governance Teams

In the coming months, APS will begin the work of transitioning our Local School Councils to Local School Governance Teams. It is just the beginning of an evolution to an even more critical role for parents, teachers, students, and community members as leaders in our schools. Now, more than ever, it will be vital that we come together with our principals to support student achievement in our schools.

APS Local School Councils will begin transitioning in December 2015. District-wide elections for Local School Governance Teams will be held in late January 2016. We will continue to function as an LSC until the elections at the start of 2016.
